Yarmouth Freeport Girls Hockey made it farther this year than they have in many years past. Beating Penobscot in regionals, they faced off against Cheverus for the State Championship, appearing there for the first time in program history. They played hard but sadly ended with a 3-2 loss.
The first period ended with one goal for Yarmouth-Freeport, scored by Isabel Peters. The second period wasn’t what the team had expected with Lucy Johnson scoring three goals for Cheverus. The team worked hard and Emma White from Freeport was able to score another goal in the third period, but unfortunately, YFGH ran out of time to score enough to tie for overtime or take the win. Captain Sadie Carnes says that this season was full of big milestones for the team. They finished with a 17-1-3 record, which is the best record in program history. She also says that “Just making it to Regionals was a big accomplishment for the team and something to be super proud of.” It’s safe to say YFGH had a lot of successes this season and should be proud of their hard work.
Congratulations to Sadie Carnes for recently winning the Becky Schaffer Award, an award given to Maine’s best senior hockey player!
