Commercial Arts at PATHS

YHS students are fortunate to have the option to attend Portland Arts & Technology High School (aka PATHS) and study in their many programs. Junior Quincy Schnee is a first-year attendee in their Commercial Arts Program.

This past April, Quincy’s PATHS program had a big art show at Pine Cone & Chickadee in Portland, Maine. The show consisted of student-made artwork from the previous semester. There were screen-printed T-shirts, pins with designs, prints, and also a gallery wall showpiece. The people involved were the kids in both the AM and PM class. Each year there is a theme for the show, and this year was “Modern Monsters”. The show gave students to see the process of being in the art business all the way through, from producing to selling. It also provided students with a learning opportunity for how to price things (as they had to do group pricing of the materials). Ms. Long is the commercial art teacher at PATHS and the organizer of the art show. The self-fulfillment of creating and selling your own art is just one of the plusses of life at PATHS, Quincy shares another plus is that “food at PATHS is so good!”

Quincy’s message to students at YHS considering PATHS is that PATHS is a great way to get out of everyday school and into a world you’re more passionate about. There are over 15 different study options available for high school students at PATHS, ranging from carpentry and plumbing to dance and education. Students at PATHS not only have the opportunity to study something they’re interested in, they will walk away with real-life job skills.
