Elective Highlights

-INTRO-

In our school, everyone participates in electives. Whether that be a foreign language, ceramics, self-defense & yoga, etc. We are lucky that Yarmouth High School has such a wide and enamoring array of electives to choose from! But with so much variety, how can you know what to expect? With that in mind, here are some hand-selected classes that will be explained in this article to spark interest for future class selection.

-Intro to Psychology and Sociology-

Interview with Anya Sulyandziga, a current Intro to Psych/Soc student.

This class is dedicated to the study of human behavior, development, and learning, along with how the conduction of mental actions are affected in group and individual settings. In this course, we cover neuropsychology, cognition, emotion, memory, personality, mental health and disorders, race, class, gender, and research methods to analyze these topics.

Sulyandziga: “Psych is really interesting, and Mrs. Carrigan is a great teacher- so that’s definitely a plus [To have a class with her] … If you are looking for [a class] to challenge your mind on an interesting topic - understanding how people behave in a group setting or just by themselves. If you are thinking about joining the class, then yeah, you should definitely try to get in.”

Doyle: “Are there any specific projects that you have done so far in Psych that have been interesting?”

Sulyandziga: “We do a lot of posters and that kind of stuff, but I like watching the movies and documentaries that we do in Psych. For example, we watched the ‘Stanford Prison Experiment,’ which was really interesting if you know what that is. It was cool to watch the movie cuz’ in the movie it’s like, all the B-List white boys you see everywhere *laughter*.”

Sulyandziga: “Also, towards the end of the quarter we are going to be doing the forms that always get sent out to the school.”

Doyle: “The questionnaire things?”*

Sulyandziga: “Mhm, that’s also fun.

*Intro to Psych students send out google forms as one of the projects in their class to the entire student body. These usually involve strangely personal or very random questions but are used for data in an experimental procedure created by students.

-Acting 2-

Currently, there is only one Acting II class this semester, consisting of three sophomores and two juniors… but this won't stop them from creating two OUTSTANDING One-act plays that are being directed, acted, and produced completely by these five individuals with the help of our fantastic theater teacher Mrs. Puelle! Shows featured in this art elective will be presented at the end of the semester and are invite only.

-Intro to Engineering-

Intro to engineering is for anyone interested in any field of engineering, whether that be civil, electrical, or aerospace! Students in this class have been working hard to learn the basics of model drafting and building, as well as competing against each other in a self-designed boat race! Sources also say there will be a field trip for this semester course to a university’s engineering department. No doubt about it folks, engineering students will reap the benefits of the modern age!
