Maine is a coastal state, and a popular hobby for those at the beach this summer has been surfing. Surfing has picked up in popularity over the past few years, and is a great way to get in the ocean and get connected with nature. It is also a super fun activity to do with friends.
I lived in Hawaii, and have been surfing ever since I was young. Surfing in Hawaii and Surfing in Maine are actually surprisingly similar. While in Hawaii, the waves were bigger and more intense, but the feeling of catching a fast moving wave is nevertheless the same. The chill vibe the Maine shores bring in the summertime is perfect for hanging out with friends and catching some waves to cool off from the sun.
An average day surfing in the summer is an exhilarating experience. It starts with the drive there, captivating the stoke, hyping yourself up with music. When you finally get to the beach, paddle out is arguably the hardest part. Being slammed by waves pushing you to shore as you endlessly make your way out the back. But, when you pass that wall, the most rewarding bit is making it to the line and seeing the set waves roll in.
You wait for the wave with patience, and once it comes, you psych yourself up and paddle towards the shore. When the wave grips the tail of your board you stand up, and feel the board move underneath your feet. As you move up and down the face, you memorize the feeling, hoping to relive it later, but the only way to get the feeling again is by paddling out and catching more exhilarating waves. Surfing Provides Vibes to be unmatched, and for anyone who has not yet tried it, you should get out to the beach before the summer's out, and try to ride some cool summer waves.
YHS Senior Adam Strobel says, “Hanging out with the crew bright and early is a lovely bonding experience!”
YHS Senior Devyn Doyle says her favorite part about surfing is “successfully taming the beast 😈” also saying she enjoys “Catching big waves can be intimidating, but talking to my friends the whole time definitely makes me less nervous.”
