Field hockey has never, at least in my time in Yarmouth, been a popular or successful sport. However, this year, the team felt stronger than ever. We knew each other and trusted each other. We beat teams that had always bested us in the past, like Cape Elizabeth, York, and Freeport. We ended the season with a 12-1-1 record, the best in program history. We sailed into playoffs with a 6-0 win over Wells, and then a 2-1 overtime win against York, a team that Yarmouth hadn’t beaten in who knows how long. We took Yarmouth Field Hockey to the regional finals—again for the first time in years —where we played Freeport. We lost 2-1 in
double overtime.
This season also leaves me with a lot to be proud of. We made program history. I’m proud of each girl on the team. I know that each person has grown so much this season and I’m excited to see who they become. I’ve been asked a lot recently how I feel about
our loss - and by some very random people. I’ve decided that while I’m sad that the season ended before I would have liked it to, what matters the most is the team that I got to spend four years with. They are the reason I love field hockey, not the wins and the possibility of titles.
Most importantly, they’ve taught me that all you have to do to bounce back from a bad day is jk LOL, dab, and griddy on the haters.
